From April 21 to 27, The 15th China Petroleum Engineering Design Competition was successfully held at China University of Petroleum-Beijing. Centered on the theme “Blue Ocean, Green Innovation, Excellence Leading the Way”, the event attracted a record-breaking 4,511 teams and over 6,500 participants from 49 domestic and international universities and research institutes, setting new highs in scale, quantity, and quality of entries. The remarkable innovation and educational outcomes of the competition were featured in a special report by China Central Television (CCTV).
University leadership, including President Jin Yan, Vice Chancellor Han Kefei, and Vice Presidents Liu Zhichang and Zhang Guangqing, attended the event and emphasized its close integration with CUP’s educational mission and academic values.
This year’s challenge focused on the strategic development of the Bozhong 19-6 condensate gas field in the Bohai Sea, aligning the competition with national energy priorities. A new "open recruitment" mechanism was introduced, fostering a collaborative education model of “industry-oriented challenges, student-led solutions, joint problem-solving, and talent cultivation.” A panel of 70 experts from companies including CNPC, Sinopec, and CNOOC conducted multiple rounds of evaluation, reviewing 90 domestic proposals and 27 international entries. Ultimately, the team “Bai Jing Bu By” from China University of Petroleum-Beijing claimed the highest honor—the “Excellence Cup.” Additionally, 15 teams were awarded national first and second prizes, recognizing their outstanding creativity and engineering acumen.
During the event, the university organized a series of activities, including the National Petroleum Cultural Works Collection Campaign, the Seminar on Cultivating the “Daqing Spirit (Iron Man Spirit)” in Higher Education, the National Petroleum Engineering Knowledge Contest, the 15th Doctoral Academic Forum, and forums on the integrated development of education, technology, and talent, alongside a celebration for the 35th anniversary of the Petroleum Engineering program.
Additionally, meetings such as the China Petroleum Education Society’s Higher Education Committee Annual Conference and the competition organizing committee’s session were held to ensure the competition’s smooth operation and lasting academic value.
At the April 27 awards ceremony, President Jin Yan reflected on the 15-year evolution of the competition and its role in nurturing talent. He highlighted future plans to incorporate artificial intelligence to enhance the competition’s innovation and technological integration. Leaders from the three national oil giants expressed their continued support, reaffirming their commitment to building broader platforms for cultivating the next generationof petroleum professionals.
Co-organized by the China National Committee of the World Petroleum Council, the Chinese Petroleum Society, and the China Petroleum Education Society, with strong support from CNPC, Sinopec, and CNOOC, the competition was hosted by China University of Petroleum-Beijing. It continues to uphold the principles of fairness, transparency, and academic excellence while serving as a premier international platform aligned with China’s strategic energy development goals.
